Where to Explore
Activities in the Royal Gorge Region
While rafting season will have passed, there is tons to do in Cañon City in the fall. Florence, Salida, Breckenridge, Cripple Creek and Colorado Springs are all about an hour away or less if you want to explore the the greater area while you’re in town.
If you are interested in a guided Cañon City experience please get in touch with Will Cohen at Colorado Jeep Tours. Will is offering our guests discounts on excursions including the Royal Gorge train, ziplining over the Royal Gorge and of course, jeep tours of the area.
Here's a small sampling of the things you can do in the area. Check our the Royal Gorge Region Visitor’s Guide for more information on fall activities.
ROYAL GORGE
The Royal Gorge is a 1000 ft crack in the Earth that is not only spectacular rafting in the early summer but is picturesque and impressive the whole year. There are several ways to enjoy the Gorge in the fall including a train ride through the gorge at river level or a visit to the Royal Gorge Bridge at the rim. There are many free hiking and biking trails at the rim of the gorge. For those looking for adventure we recommend the Fremont Peak trail.
ARKANSAS RIVER
The Arkansas River runs right through Cañon City and is accessible via many parks and trails in the town. The River Walk is a flat hiking and biking trail that follows the river through most of town. You can also hike Tunnel Drive from just west of Cañon City up into the bottom of the Royal Gorge. Fishing in the Arkansas River is great this time of year, be sure to get a Colorado Fishing license if you bring out your rod!
